          Avgonima

          • A small medieval village situated among pine trees, offering stunning sunset views.

          Anavatos

          • Anavatos is one of the most visited spots on Chios Island. This village, dating back to the 1300s, is a typical Byzantine village. Its location and layout were entirely designed for defense. During that period, the biggest threat to Chios Island was pirate attacks, and the village served as a shield against these invasions.
          • Another significant aspect of Anavatos is its role in the Chios Massacre of 1822. The people of Chios enjoyed a comfortable life with low taxes paid to the Ottoman Empire, thriving in maritime trade and mastic production. However, when Greek sailors from Samos arrived and incited the islanders to revolt, causing harm to the local Turks and destroying mosques, the Ottoman Empire intervened in an unprecedented manner.
          • As a result of this intervention, the population of Chios, which was around 100,000, was reduced to 2,000. Nearly 23,000 people were executed, and around 50,000 were exiled to İzmir and North Africa. Approximately 2,000 of the island’s wealthy residents were spared to maintain the mastic trade.
          • This tragic event has faded over time. However, you can see Eugène Delacroix’s painting “The Massacre at Chios,” created in 1824, at the Louvre Museum.

These locations in the Northern and Central West parts of Chios offer a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Thus, making them a perfect escape for those seeking a serene and culturally enriching experience.

            Good Voyage!
